Record of the Yuancong Duyaya
Five Dynasties(907-60)
Bronze seal
Height 2.3cm, Length 6cm, Width 4.8cm

This flat rectangular seal has a pierced knob cast on its reverse side, with a semi-circle protruding from the top of the knob. Its body is thin and flat. The whole piece is brown in colour, with occasional green blemishes. The face features six characters in two columns, written in thin relief-carved clerical script. They read “Record of the Yuancong Duyaya”. The title Yuancong derives from the title of the Tang dynasty Imperial Guard: Yuancong Jinjun. The conferring of this title carried a set of special privileges. Duyaya is an official position. The Yuancong Duyaya was a senior official position that supported a military commander, often seen in the historical records of the Five Dynasties. Very few official seals survive from the Five Dynasties period, making this a unique piece of historical evidence for research into the bureaucracy of this period of China’s history.
