Record of a Dream Journey across Oceans, Halls and Cities, semi-cursive script
Yang Weizhen(1296-1370)
Hand scroll,ink on paper
Height 35cm, Width 74cm

The calligrapher and author of this scroll casts off the constraints of the mundane world, travelling freely in the realm of the immortals in his dreams. The complete scroll includes 401 characters in 32 columns. The brushwork is firm, with a sturdy bone structure technique. The compact composition tends towards segmented cursive script, where individual characters are rendered in flowing cursive script without joining consecutive characters. These innovations are clear evidence of the personal artistic character of the work. As both his longest text and latest surviving work, this piece is exemplary of Yang Weizhen’s calligraphy.

Yang Weizhen had the style name Lian Fu, and was also known as Iron Cliff. He was a native of Shaoxing in Zhejiang, and a talented calligrapher of the Yuan dynasty, skilled in running cursive script.
