Xunyi quan weight
Qin dynasty(221-207 BC)
Height 6.5cm, Diameter of mouth 8.3cm, diameter of base 9.5cm

This standard weight is part of the system of weights and measures created when the first emperor Qin Shi Huangdi unified China. It is an octagonal hollow trapezoid, with a horizontal rectangular bar over the upper mouth of the hollow centre. The characters “Xunyi”(a place name, now in modern day Shaanxi Province) are cast in positive legend seal script on either side of the bar. Imperial decrees from the first emperor Qin Shi Huangdi and the second emperor Qin Er Shi appear on the eight faces of the quan. They are written in unembellished and sturdy, small seal script. This is a rare example of a Qin dynasty quan weight inscribed with two imperial commands.
